When Spring arrives, the weather gets warmer, and everything starts coming back to life. One of my favorite parts of Spring is watching my flowers bloom!
This is also the time when I start hunting for new flowers to add to my flower beds. So how do I know which flowers to plant in the Spring?
Lucky for me, I took three years of Horticulture in high school, and I learned a lot. But not everyone took classes that were all about plants and flowers.
So, I’m going to share what I know about the different flowers to plant in the Spring!
One of the most common and popular choices are bulbs. There are many different types of bulbs to choose from. They are easy to plant and maintain, and typically once planted, they come back every year. These types of plants and flowers are known as perennials.
Not all bulbs are perennials, however. They can also be annuals or biennials. It really just depends on what you’re looking for.

I’m sure you’ll be familiar with some of these, and there may be a few you haven’t heard of. These are just some of the many types of flower bulbs to choose from.
- Calla Lily
- Canna Lily
- Elephant Ears
Of course, these are just a few of the many different bulbs to choose from. If none of these listed tickle your fancy, there are many other bulb types to choose from for planting in the Spring.
Bulbs aren’t the only option for flowers to plant in the Spring. There are many beautiful flowers to choose from. I think the hardest part can sometimes be whether to go with an annual or perennial.
If you’re looking to change up your flower gardens, I’d go with annuals. But if you want something you can plant that will come back year after year, perennials are the way to go.
Ideas for annual flowers to plant in the Spring come in a wide variety of species and colors. They include, but are not limited to:
- Wax Begonias
- New Guinea Impatiens
Perennials also come in many different varieties and colors to choose from. Remember, these come back every year, so you’ll want to be careful of where you plant them. They include:
- Bleeding Heart
- Creeping Phlox

Regardless of which flowers you choose, they’re all beautiful, and will add tons of color to your landscape.
The creeping varieties are great for large coverage areas. You could pair these with one of the others as a filler, and it would look amazing together!
